The 15 Best Music Production Tips for Beginners
Written by SoundOracle
If you're an aspiring music producer, it's important to learn from those who are already successful in the field. Here are 15 tips from successful music producers that will help you improve your production skills, work more efficiently, and develop habits that may ultimately lead to more income in your production career.
1. Find your own sound. This is usually something that will develop over time. However, if you are conscious of it, it will happen much faster and be more honed. It's important to have a signature sound that sets you apart from other producers. Figure out what makes your productions unique and use that to your advantage.
2. Use high-quality samples. Since we pride ourselves on making the most high-quality samples available, that this was going to rank high on the list. Using low-quality samples will make your productions sound amateurish. Invest in some good quality sample libraries and then pick your favs out of them. Remember to keep evolving and refining your favorite selections and kits.
3. Get organized. A well-organized studio is a production studio. Take the time to organize your workflow so you can work more efficiently and be less stressed when working on music.
4. Ask people who aren't producers why they like a certain beat or song. This tip is so underrated. If you think about it, the average music listener is the person that you are ultimately making the music for. So why not ask them what they like about certain beats and songs that they like to listen to.
5. Practice makes improvement. The more you produce, the better you'll get at it. Set sometime aside each day to work on your music and don't be afraid to experiment.
6. Don't overthink things. Most of the time the simplest ideas are the best ones. If you're stuck on something, try not to overthink it and just go with it. Here's a hack that I use. If I find myself getting stuck on something, I'll set a timer for 2 minutes and force myself to commit before the timer goes off or when the timer goes off. This way I'm not overthinking things and I'm making decisions quickly which is important if you want to avoid the beat block.
7. Take criticism well. When showing your music to others, be prepared to receive constructive criticism. Don't take it personally and use it to improve your music.
8. Always be learning. The music industry is constantly changing so it's important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies. Attend music production workshops, read books/articles, and listen to music producers talk about their craft.
9. Don't be afraid to experiment. Trying new things is the only way you're going to grow as a music producer. Think about it, all of the producers that went on to be the goats all had their own style. So don't be afraid to experiment with new sounds and ideas.
10. Join an online community like UnQuantized Podcast. Being a part of a music production community can help you learn from others and improve your skills. It's also a great way to meet other music producers who can collaborate with you or give you feedback on your music.
11. Speaking of collaborating... Collaborating with other music producers is a great way to improve your skills. Not to mention, it's a lot of fun and can help you discover your strong points and weak points as a producer.
12. Use templates in your DAW. Templates are great for two reasons. One, they help you get your ideas down quickly. Two, they make you look like a star when collabing in the studio because you work faster than most producers.
13. Don't strive for perfectionism. Perfectionism will turn into fancy procrastination. Be bold. Make commitments. Finish.
Becoming a music producer takes time, practice, and lots of hard work. But with the right tips from those who have already achieved success, you'll be on your way to making incredible tracks and songs. So don't forget to apply these 15 music production tips whenever possible.
